Home care vs facility cost comparison

Put a home care schedule next to a facility bill. You enter both from your quotes, and the page shows the difference and the number of home care hours a week that would cost the same.

Your answers stay in this browser. Nothing you type is sent to Carevo.

What this tool cannot do

  • Carevo cannot tell you which kind of care is right, or what care costs where you live. Only the figures you enter are used.
  • It does not compare quality, safety, how much care a person needs, or whether Medicaid, Medicare, VA or insurance pays any part. Medicare does not pay for 24-hour-a-day care at home or for custodial care alone.
  • It leaves out taxes, one-time entrance or community fees, and price increases during the year.
  • It is an estimate based on published rules, not advice.

Common questions

Where do the numbers come from?

From you. This comparison uses the hourly rate and the facility monthly cost that you enter from quotes. It does not use national or state averages, because an average rarely matches a specific agency or facility.

What should I put in the facility monthly cost?

Ask the facility for a written fee schedule. Include the base rent or room charge, any care level or service fees, meals if billed separately, and any monthly add-ons. Entrance or community fees paid once are not monthly costs, so leave them out and weigh them separately.

What are "other monthly costs"?

Costs that change with the choice. At home that is rent or mortgage, utilities, food and similar bills that continue. For a facility it is anything you would keep paying, such as a home you are keeping, plus personal items and extras the facility does not bill.

What does the break-even figure mean?

It is the weekly hours of home care at your hourly rate that would cost the same each month as the facility. Fewer hours than that cost less at home on these numbers. It says nothing about whether the care needed can safely be given in that number of hours.
