Michigan Medicaid home care programs: what we have verified so far

Michigan Medicaid is run by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). We could not read MDHHS program pages when we wrote this, so this page lists only what Medicaid.gov confirms and where to ask.

Medicaid in Michigan is run by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). We could not read MDHHS's program pages when we wrote this, so this page does not describe Michigan's home care programs, eligibility rules or caregiver pay. We would rather say that than publish rules we have not checked.

What we have confirmed

Medicaid.gov lists MDHHS as the Michigan state Medicaid agency, with a Michigan ENROLLS number of 833-599-6444 and a TTY number of 866-501-5656. The same Medicaid.gov list is the place to find every state's Medicaid agency.

Medicaid.gov describes self-directed services as a model where participants, or their representatives, choose and manage the people who provide their services, with employer authority and budget authority. Whether a given Michigan program includes this, and whether it allows relatives, depends on the program's own rules, which we have not verified.

What we have not verified

We have not read an MDHHS page that states any of the following, so we do not state them:

  • which Medicaid programs pay for personal care at home for older adults and people with disabilities;
  • who qualifies for each program and how to apply;
  • whether participants can hire relatives, which relatives are excluded and what training or screening is required;
  • pay rates or hours.

How to find out

  1. Contact MDHHS or your local Medicaid office, using the contact details on the Medicaid.gov state list.
  2. Ask which programs pay for care at home, whether there is a waiting list, and whether you can choose and hire your own caregiver.
  3. Ask in writing whether a family member can be paid, and what rules apply to a spouse or a parent.

This page is marked noindex until we can read MDHHS's own pages and cite them.
