Buddhika Jayawardhana
Co-founder & CTO
Co-founder and CTO. 15+ years in software engineering, formerly at Coviu (CSIRO telehealth).
Why I write about this
I write about how the provider data actually works, because the difference between a directory you can trust and one you cannot is entirely in the data behind it.
About Buddhika
Buddhika is the co-founder and CTO of Carevo, with more than 15 years in software engineering. He previously worked at Coviu, the telehealth platform spun out of CSIRO, which is where he first worked on systems that sit between clinicians, providers and the people who need them.
At Carevo he is responsible for the provider data: how it is ingested from the regulator, how it is normalised, and how services are matched to the people looking for them. For the US site that means the CMS Provider Data Catalog and the NPI Registry, which are the source of every provider listing, rating and count on this site.
He writes about how that data is sourced, what it can and cannot tell you, and where the limits are. On this site those limits are stated explicitly rather than glossed over: CMS rates only some kinds of provider, the NPI Registry is filled in by the providers themselves, and neither says which care a provider will actually deliver in your area.
Areas of focus
- Public provider data: how CMS and NPI Registry records are structured and what they mean
- Matching people to services on category, funding and area
- The limits of published provider data
About Buddhika Jayawardhana
Who is Buddhika Jayawardhana?
Buddhika Jayawardhana is the co-founder and CTO of Carevo. He has more than 15 years in software engineering and previously worked at Coviu, the CSIRO telehealth spin-out.
What does Buddhika work on at Carevo?
The provider data: how it is ingested from the regulator, normalised, and matched to the people searching. On the US site that is the CMS Provider Data Catalog and the NPI Registry.
Where does Carevo US provider data come from?
Provider listings come from the CMS Provider Data Catalog and the CMS NPI Registry, both US government data in the public domain. Star ratings are CMS's, not ours. No listing is invented. Where we also read a provider's own website for the areas and funding it says it covers, that is labelled as the provider's claim wherever it appears, with the source and the date we read it.
Carevo is not a regulated adviser. Our team researches and checks content against primary sources, but nothing on this site is financial, legal or medical advice. See our editorial standards.
