Assisted living in Massachusetts
Assisted living communities provide housing, meals and help with daily tasks for people who need some support but not round-the-clock nursing care. States license assisted living, and the rules differ from state to state.

How assisted living is paid for
- Medicare doesn't pay for long-term care, also called custodial care, and doesn't pay for personal care like bathing and dressing when that is the only care someone needs.
- Medicaid home and community-based services (HCBS) let people who qualify for Medicaid get care at home or in their community instead of an institution. Your state Medicaid agency decides who qualifies.
- Many families pay privately, and some long-term care insurance policies pay toward care. Check what your policy covers before care starts.
