Get paid to care for a family member in Massachusetts: not yet verified

We could not read Massachusetts's state agency pages on paying family caregivers when we wrote this, so we do not state Massachusetts's rules. Ask the agency before you plan around it.

We have not verified whether Massachusetts Medicaid pays family members to give care, so this page does not say. MassHealth is the agency to ask. When we can read the state's program pages, this page will cite them.

What we can confirm

Medicaid.gov lists MassHealth as the Massachusetts contact for Medicaid questions, with these numbers: 800-841-2900, with TTY 711. Medicaid.gov also describes self-directed services in general: participants, or their representatives, choose and manage the people who provide their services. Each state decides which programs include this and whether relatives can be hired.

Questions to ask the agency

  • Which Medicaid programs in Massachusetts pay for personal care at home?
  • Can the person receiving care choose and hire their own worker?
  • Can a relative be that worker? Are a spouse, a parent of a minor child or a legal guardian excluded?
  • What screening, enrollment or training does a relative need, and who pays them?
  • Is there a waiting list for the program?

Ask for the answers in writing, with the name of the program and the rule it comes from. People often ask about Adult Foster Care and the Personal Care Attendant (PCA) program. We have not read the state's page on them, so ask about them by name.

Where to go next

See the Massachusetts overview and the paid family caregiver guide for how other states handle this. Carevo is a connection platform and directory. We do not run any Massachusetts program or enroll anyone. Why does this page have no rules?

The state's pages were not available to our fetch tools when we wrote this, and we do not write program rules from memory or from non-government summaries.
