Get paid to care for a family member in Colorado: not yet verified

We could not read Colorado's state agency pages on paying family caregivers when we wrote this, so we do not state Colorado's rules. Ask the agency before you plan around it.

We have not verified whether Colorado Medicaid pays family members to give care, so this page does not say. Health First Colorado is the agency to ask. When we can read the state's program pages, this page will cite them.

What we can confirm

Medicaid.gov lists Health First Colorado as the Colorado contact for Medicaid questions, with these numbers: 800-221-3943 for the Member Contact Center. Medicaid.gov also describes self-directed services in general: participants, or their representatives, choose and manage the people who provide their services. Each state decides which programs include this and whether relatives can be hired.

Questions to ask the agency

  • Which Medicaid programs in Colorado pay for personal care at home?
  • Can the person receiving care choose and hire their own worker?
  • Can a relative be that worker? Are a spouse, a parent of a minor child or a legal guardian excluded?
  • What screening, enrollment or training does a relative need, and who pays them?
  • Is there a waiting list for the program?

Ask for the answers in writing, with the name of the program and the rule it comes from. People often ask about Consumer Directed Attendant Support Services (CDASS) and In-Home Support Services (IHSS). We have not read the state's page on them, so ask about them by name.

Where to go next

Common questions

Can a family member be paid to care for me in Colorado?

We have not verified this from a state agency page, so we do not say. Ask the agency whether a Medicaid program in Colorado lets you hire a relative, and which relatives are excluded.

Who decides?

Why does this page have no rules?

The state's pages were not available to our fetch tools when we wrote this, and we do not write program rules from memory or from non-government summaries.
